Ladies and gentlemen, we were just informed that all people flying into the United States will have to wait until their luggage arrives in the Toronto Airport. Luggage was left in Greece in order to permit us to fly because of weight limitations.
“You were so right about the carry-on.”

“Mom taught me all that I know.”
That was my brother and me. We were traveling with a group from school and our group happened to be unlucky during the journey back home.
I remember arguing with my brother in the Athens airport about the importance of a carry-on and an extra change of clothes before firmly (and figuratively) putting my foot down on the subject. A carry-on can feel like a hassle, but let’s talk about the nine things that might turn out to be your saving grace.

- An extra backpack or tote
I always bring a tote or backpack in case I need to separate my things or a place to put clothes I change out of. Also, I’ve recently found that I will put my camera equipment in a rolling carry-on and then switch them into a backpack when I arrive. It saves me from carrying all of that weight on my back.
- A clear bag for liquids
I cannot stress this enough! Regulations are different from country to country. I was once stopped in Berlin because I had two clear bags, separating the types of liquids (toothpaste versus sunscreen and makeup remover). I had to, right there in the middle of the security line, throw out some items because they did not fit in the quart-sized clear bag. Save yourself the hassle and put all of your liquids into one clear pouch.
- A small blanket
Most people opt for a travel pillow, but I always bring a small blanket with me to roll in my carry-on. Whether it is a cold plane ride or because I want to take a nap during a long layover, a blanket has always come in handy.
- Second pair of shoes & socks
I hope you are wearing comfortable shoes while going through the airport, but if you are not, then bring a second pair of shoes and socks. You might know that you will jump straight into your itinerary when you land or any other situation, but having a light-weight second pair of shoes will be helpful to have. Key point: lightweight shoes. Don’t pack heavy snow boots (unless you need them).
- An entire outfit
Roll. Don’t fold. Rolling the second outfit you pack will save you space!
Your second outfit can be comfy sweats. If you are like me, you don’t wear sweats unless you are going to the gym. Don’t get me wrong, I love comfort, but I don’t love wearing sweats in public. So, when I travel, my second outfit is a pair of leggings and a comfortable shirt that I can change into later.
Your second outfit can also be a pair of jeans and a casual shirt. Whatever it may be, pack a full second outfit in case of delays, unexpected overnight stays or a canceled flight.
- Snacks
Sometimes the food on the plane is no good or you have a long layover, so having a snack to re-energize is great! I like to have granola bars or chips. It never hurts to be prepared in case hunger strikes!
- Headphones
One thing I’ve learned in my recent travels is the importance of wired headphones! I’ve switched to wireless headphones in the last two years and I made the mistake of not bringing wired headphones for in-flight entertainment. Avoid boredom and pack some wired headphones!
Tip: buy a headphone case to avoid tangled wires.
- Technology Needs
Chargers! I pack not just one, but two, phone chargers. Chargers can be unreliable so having a backup charger helps you avoid paying for a $50 charger in over-priced airport stores.
Portable chargers! The worst thing is when you sit on a plane, plug your charger into the USB port on the plane and realize it does not work! A fully charged portable charger is a must.
If you are traveling internationally, then think about the adapter you’ll buy. There are some great options out there. I suggest finding a universal adapter.
Most importantly, make sure you check the airline carry-on regulations. Save yourself from extra fees or the embarrassment of figuring out what to do with your stuff (I’m pointing to myself here.)
